‘FLUTE MAGIC’ OPENS SINFONIA TORONTO SEASON

One of the world’s finest flutists, Marc Grauwels will kick off Sinfonia Toronto’s 12th concert season on Friday, October 1, at 8 pm in Glenn Gould Studio. The orchestra’s Music Director Nurhan Arman will conduct the program, titled ‘Flute Magic.’

Mr. Grauwels will perform Mendelssohn’s Flute Concerto in D Minor and Canadian composer Kevork Andonian’s A Longing for Joy. Other works on the program are Turina’s La Oracion del torero and the Czech master Josef Suk’s Serenade.

With 60-plus recordings to his credit, Belgian virtuoso Marc Grauwels is among his generation's most recorded flutists. He has consistently drawn praise from critics not only for his recordings but for his concert activity as well. Grauwels typically carries an intense schedule of concerts, with more than 100 performances a year. Over 100 works have been written especially for him, including Astor Piazzolla's History of the Tango (1985) and Ennio Morricone's Cantate for Europe (1988). His recordings are available on labels including Naxos, Marco Polo, Cypres, Helios, Pavane, and Brilliant Classics.

Acclaimed as “a world-class ensemble” by Germany’s Russelsheimer Echo, Sinfonia Toronto is one of Canada’s finest chamber orchestras. Its repertoire includes all the major works for string orchestra from baroque to contemporary, and it has premiered many new works. It is based at CBC Glenn Gould Studio, where many of its concerts have been recorded for national broadcast. Other recordings include a CD of works by Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Khachaturian; a world-premiere recording of the newly discovered J.S. Bach aria ‘Alles mit Gott,’ released by Analekta on iTunes; and the JUNO winner Flanders Field Reflections, a Marquis Classics (EMI) CD of music by John Burge.
