Our mission is to present a wide spectrum of string orchestra music for Toronto audiences, from classical to contemporary, and to take this beautiful repertoire out to other communities across Ontario.  We spice programs of beloved major works with exciting new pieces and historical hidden gems.  We often play music by Canadian composers, and we proudly include Canadian music in all our international tours.

We reach out beyond concert halls to perform in schools and for audiences in less traditional settings, to act on our conviction that music is for everyone.  We delight in engaging students with our interactive Concerts under Construction program and uniting Toronto’s diverse population in the shared experience of live performance.

Sinfonia Toronto is a Registered Charitable organization with an unpaid Board of Directors and additional support from a wonderful community of volunteers.  Our Board members and volunteers come together in five key committees: Development, Education & Outreach, Marketing & Promotion, and Private Funding & Events.

Sinfonia Toronto’s founding Music Director Nurhan Arman conceived of the orchestra as a vibrant fusion of three performance modes: virtuoso solo artistry (everyone except cellists plays standing), the intimacy of chamber music (facilitated by standing in an open crescent), and unity and drive propelled by a conductor.

Since the first Masterpiece Series in 1990-2000, this dynamic formula has carried the orchestra through two decades of growth as well as still retaining subscribers from that very first season.  2019-2020 is the orchestra’s 21st season.

Sinfonia Toronto has played in Barrie every year since 2001, performed for series in 10 other cities around Ontario and in Montreal, and is the only ensemble booked annually by the Algoma Conservatory Concert Series in Sault Ste-Marie.

Series concerts were extended from downtown into North York in 2012, and the orchestra has performed at senior centres, Nuit Blanche and summer festivals.  It has played regularly with the Toronto Korean-Canadian Choir since 2002 and collaborated with performing groups and heritage associations from ten different Toronto multicultural communities.

The orchestra’s first international tour took them through central Germany in 2008.  Since then they have toured in Spain (2010), Florida (2015), South America (Argentina, Peru and Uruguay, 2018) and China (September-October 2019).

The orchestra has recorded for Marquis Classics, Cambria and Analekta. Their Marquis Classics cd of music by Canadian composer John Burge won a JUNO.  The Cambria releases, Hollywood Flute with flutist Louise DiTullio, and Premieres, featuring Toronto violinist Conrad Chow, are distributed by Naxos.  Analekta recorded their historic world premiere of the rediscovered Bach aria ‘Alles Mit Gott’ with Canadian soprano Aline Kutan.
